Anne is starting Funny Weather: Art in an Emergency
I struggled with rating this because I really enjoyed the essays- but because it was a collection of works, rather than essays written for the purported purpose of the book, it lacked cohesiveness and don’t really fulfill the promise of its premise.

Anne is starting What Is Wrong with Men: Patriarchy, the Crisis of Masculinity, and How (Of Course) Michael Douglas Films Explain Everything
Her point about the contrast between Men’s Rights resources being largely spaces for anger or complaints vs. the safe spaces built for and by women (shelters, trained counselors and therapists) is pretty shocking.

But once you start seeing it, it’s everywhere.

Anne is starting All Things Are Too Small: Essays in Praise of Excess
This was not the ode to hedonism that I anticipated. It was too dry, too academic and too restrained to be a celebration of pleasure and joy and maximalism. Booooooring.

Anne
Anne is starting Mrs. March
The timeline of this book is just really f’ing with me because it seems to be set in the 1950s when women would wear gloves and hose- but she’s also talking about ordering a latte? There’s been a few incongruities like that and I don’t know if they’re intentional, since the whole thing is a downward spiral into mental illness, but these feel like errors that are taking me out of the story.

Anne is starting Dead Inside
Remember when everyone made dead baby jokes because it was the most extreme, edgy thing they could think of? That’s what this book was.

The Shadow Over Little Chitaly had me straight CACKLING

Like yes I WILL read a short story of wild Ubereats style reviews about a phantom restaurant that grow increasingly spookier

I don’t normally read short stories because I want more of a commitment but I LOVE Eliza Clark’s novels so… LFG

Anne is starting Convenience Store Woman
A third of the way in and this feels like a gross representation of neurodivergence from someone who is not neurodivergent (or who has not publicly come out as such). There have been a few lines so cringey that its uncomfortable (including idly wondering why her sister wouldn’t just stab her baby to make it stop crying).
