Well - I have finished “The Mysteries of Pittsburgh”. The writing is quite good but I found the story itself not to my liking. Somehow both convoluted and transparent. The protagonist is unlikeable and his circle of friends and lovers are as unlikeable as him, along with being “characters” (X is the brat, Y is the damaged person with an agenda, Z is misunderstood…etc)
The story is pretty by the numbers

I pick this book up and read bait and then put it down. Clearly a collection of exemplary literature…this work takes concentration and contemplation.
Rereading some of these pieces as an adult is an interesting experience - I “get” concepts that eluded me as a “young man” (😉)

Interesting read - far from the typical football book. Chuck (of whom I am a fan) writes in a thought provoking and questioning style that causes my brain to wake up and say “this is not the old bs…lock in Jonny!” Great debate and analysis about the American version of football. Well structured and compelling

I’m done with this series - everything comes to an end, and this is it for me. The formula (whilst tried and true) no longer works for me.

Interesting collection of baseball stories with a small town focus - interesting and relaxing reads.

Deep & multilayered...regularly makes feel feel unimaginative, lazy and dumb. DFW = supergenius

Brilliantly erudite, without a shred of pretense. I can smell the Mexican ragweed, the ocean and the surf wax. Go find this book

Enjoyable read - there is certainly a pattern & a familiarity to the writing, but I like it
