An early Hammett work that shows his narrative gift, colorful and colloquial language, and low life characters. Others have said it better but H took murder away from the tea gardens and high lifes and gave it to the criminals and low life's who were better at it anyway. Somewhat dated now but one reads it to see the sea change not to tsk tsk the tide for not going further.
