I hate Laura’s daughter and the politics is boring but I’m SO CLOSE that I can’t quit now.

This is perfect for Florence so far (pictures on every page, but more words than a regular picture book)

This is not a healthy relationship at all. I’m not surprised, but I am pretty disgusted that THIS is what I’m supposed to be rooting for.

I want to love this book but I hate it. The indirectness of all the statements is SO STUPID. “I worry about cars hitting children in the parking lot.”

No. That’s SO convoluted and unnecessarily confusing. I’m not “worried about cars hitting children,” if I want Florence to understand why I need to hold her hand I’ll say “I’m worried about a car hitting you.” The indirectness is so irritating.

…her, otherwise I suspect it’s the author imposing her own worldview and ideas about what it means to be “let down by God’s plan.” If it IS the author’s own perspective, she needs to specifically state that, because this is a pretty intense judgment to make about another person’s faith. She instantly lost credibility for me by making such a sweeping statement with no quote or direct source.

“Her life might not have seemed God-fearing to an outsider, but in her bleakest moments, her faith in God’s plan was what she relied on— and it almost always let her down.”

Oof. As a religion major, I say: that sounds really unlikely to be an authentic sentiment from this person, based on what we’ve seen of her before. I’d want to see a direct quote about this from…

Ashley is starting Winterkeep (Graceling Realm, #4)
It makes my eyes roll to the back of my head when every female character is described as small. It reminds me of this:
“Men writing women characters: she was beautiful but didn’t know it. She was 5’7” and 101 pounds. Her feet were size 3. Her hat size was infant. She’d never thrown up, not even once. Her periods lasted 45 minutes. Her top was see-through.” Except it’s not men, it’s Kristin Cashore.

I remember why I never started this book even though it came out right before I finished writing my senior thesis about the series: I was bored to tears from it all being war and strategy, and this one literally has war IN THE TITLE, so it’s definitely even worse than Oathbringer. It’s so tedious 🙄

This didn’t vibe with Avatar the show at ALL. It celebrates industrialism and Aang kills a spirit to protect… a refinery?? That’s polluting and destroying the environment? No thanks.
