Doing something exceedingly rare for me: am abandoning this book! I was excited to read it and was the one that suggested it for book club. But I can't handle the writing. Who knew how important period are to me?! Maybe for some genres the stream of consciousness structure would work but not for this for me.

Fascinating & fairly readable - a lot of information/history in each chapter yet it builds towards a main thesis (and so far that is that our government was built to favor the rich and keep the poor from revolting).

"What stands out [in childhood] is not the ... Trip to Disneyland" - I disagree - as much as I agree with the point that rhythm is balancing and good, I also think that any significant breaks in rhythm can create strong memories. One of my strongest memories is our family trip to Yellowstone (at age 10). Disneyland is another. And I can't remember the prayer I used to say before bed *every* night as a small child!

So many extraneous words that I find myself mentally tightening the language as I read. Going to keep on to get to the main points.
