I am absolutely obsessed with how begrudgingly attached Arges is to Mira. Here, she acknowledges that he has a nice face cause it's a fact, but it's not until she considers three possibility of conquering such an immovable and powerful force is she really intrigued by the idea. I like this direction and I find it a great way to really start the next phase of their relationship.

I'm finding it hard to get a pin on Arin's personality, goals, and perspective. He's talking about how corrupt the Jasad king and queen were and how their rule forced Jasadi's into abysmal conditions as if he cares about the people of Jasad, but actually leads hunts to detain and execute them just for the sin of being born with magic.

I'm absolutely loving the book so far! I'm finally really starting to like the tension and connection between Sylvia and Arin. They are so perfectly suited to combat one another and it's making them hate each other even more whole building an undeniable bond.

Maybe it's not fair of me to place a higher expectation on female characters, but it's hard when I'm not satisfied with how they are conducting themselves within it. He has not grovelled enough. This is the kind of character I expect to have fully learned to never jeopardize a chance like this, because it's already happened. I'm happy Cannon had the mind for both of them but damn, I did expect more from her.

As someone who made my whole undergrad studies about representation in media and entertainment spaces (Major in Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice, Minor in Theatre Studies), the fact we're taking so much time to truly appreciate the impact of having her play a titular role, one that's never been played by a Black woman before, warms my heart.

The little theatre kid in me is so touched by this rn.
