These characters! Wow!

A breathtakingly beautiful and heartrending beginning as Emily watches her Dad die. When he reassured her that God is Love Itself, I could have wept.

Chapter 1–Utterly charming, in every way! I love that the squares of old lived near the church and the village (i.e. near their God and near their tenants). I love how Trollope discusses the tension between saving traditions and “moving with the times” in his novels!

OK, the showdown between Mrs Proudie and Mrs Grantly in Chapter 40 is one of the best things I’ve ever read!!

My heart goes out to Mr Crawley—he’s stubborn and deeply mistaken in his convictions, but he’s so desperate to hold onto any remaining shred of dignity that he can, he can’t recognize neighbourly help for what it is, and views it as patronizing charity… 😭 And Dr Arabin and Lucy Robarts are simply wonderful in their compassionate stubbornness!!

Lucy is such a wonderful, complex character!
