I’ve started reading this again... took a detour for The Stormlight Archive

I haven’t stayed up so late reading a book before in years. I should have been asleep 2 hours ago but I just couldn’t stop.

I can’t believe how angry this series makes me. It just isn’t getting better. I can only bear it because it’s an audiobook, so I just listen to it in double time when I’m driving. The protagonist is so unbelievably terrible. Either the author is a dickhead, or he’s doing a marvelous job constructing the classic Nice Guy (TM).

(Spoilers) Please stop reading now if you don’t want part of the story spoiled for you. Fucking impatient asshole kills *children* when he could have waited a couple fucking hours and done the same fucking thing but kept his village safe for his people. He’s an absolute idiot. Absolute. And he gets *rewarded* for it??? What the fuck.

I’m becoming very skeptical. I was super excited about this book, but Margaret’s humble arrogance and the lack of Oxford commas are starting to piss me off.

Man I really hope that the whole Dale-Tyler-Jazz love plot that came out of thin air actually has a place in the story other than to get Jazz off the hook, because it’s feeling like it doesn’t

Honestly, not enjoying the fact that Jazz is entirely infallible, devilishly smart, beautiful, roughly cool, with an active sex life and a laid-back laziness on top of it all.

I have never related to a character more. Richard is just as ditsy and forgetful as me. No main characters are like this.

People are so accustomed to a protagonist that is brave and daring and feisty, nearly flawless. Or they have quirky or cute flaws that aren’t really flaws. Now we have boring, ditsy Richard who seems like a tertiary character that just does what he’s told. People don’t actually relate to most book/movie protagonists, though they like to think they do. Most of us are just Richards.
