"as he sat in the stands on this balmy and beautiful night where the last wisps of clouds ran across the sky like a residue of ash from a once-brilliant fire, it seemed impossible not to look down on the field and see his own reflection."

Thoroughly enjoying it so far. Love the tone love the story. I suppose there could be more of a sporting element to it, but that's a marketing defect more than anything.

Absolutely loving this book. Deliberately trying to read slower so I don't finish it too soon.

It's the kind of literary universe which is just such an enormous pleasure to lose oneself in.

Gibson gives you just enough detail to follow the storylines, just enough material for to to craft a skeleton set in your mind of what the locations look like, but leaves you so much freedom to fill in the gaps, it's fantastic.

"Magari (sua moglie) non ha niente da dirle."
"Io e mia moglie parlavamo sempre. Sempre."

I don't remember the last time I was so enthralled in a book. I'm about half way through this, and I'm even starting to look forward to my hellish train commute, just so I get the chance to go through another twenty pages!

"A desire to believe (despite all evidence to the contrary) that words are at bottom the names of things is what makes the translator's mission seem so impossible".
....Am I being ridiculous, or does this make no sense? what the hell does "words are at bottom the names of...." mean?! Does Bellos mean "at least" / "deep down" / "basically"? Surely you can't say "words are at bottom"...

Just getting to the end of this read...i've genuinely had to google "why would an author omit punctuation", and come up with nothing. Massachusetts 1932 & Tangier 1975... 6 or 7 pages without so much as a single full stop....they don't even end with a full stop! Madness...hard going, too.

The hours after noon is probably now my favourite short story. I can't even really explain why, I just found it absolutely incredible. I'm really enjoying this book as a whole. I must say though, it can be quite heavy-going at times though..which is why it's taking me so long to get through it.

I received this book two days ago in the post, my father sent it to me, presuming I'd like it.
Good god I love those kind of unwanted / unexpected gifts (he was completely right in his assumptions).
I'm thoroughly enjoying this book, and I doubt it'll last me a third day.
