Is this book supposed to be pseudo-intellectual? Am I supposed to believe the academic main character is a complete and total idiot? Because Alice Law is a fucking idiot. She goes from hearing torture, walking days straight determined to make this suffering mean something, to trying to become a tree. She might be the most unlikeable protagonist I've ever read.

Also, Kuang uses "titillating" twice in one page.
