I started reading this book with high expectations. I’ve been a fan of this particular Renowned Homosexual since he first appeared on our tv screens in the 1980s. The presence at his side of a small rescue dog was the clincher for me, so upon learning he had written this memoir of his canine companions, I had to have it. And it exceeded my hopes: I laughed - a lot - and I cried, too. Julian writes beautifully.

I’m beginning to think that the joy of this series for me is the small, specific nature of the stories. Isabel doesn’t go far, we follow her weeks through meetings and meals. And the delight is in the way we are involved in her life: watching Charlie grow, the relationship with Jamie mature and blossom, her gentle nudging of Cat towards self-knowledge. I have already ordered copies of the next two novels.

I have to read this in small bites because it threatens to raise my blood pressure dangerously
