Reading _Strangers On a Train_, the first novel in the collection. Highsmith is superb, delightful.

This is book #3 of my currently active reading. The Mojave was never my favorite desert. I grew up by annual turns in Los Angeles and northern Iowa, and as a child the Mojave struck me as an ugly waste of earth that walled me off from greener kindlier landscapes. Having since then fallen in love with the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, and Death Valley, I think it's time to reconcile. This coverage begins well.

So far, so good. I hope I can gain enough momentum to make some progress in this.

The writing is terrific. I am astonished by the Tom Wolfe-ian tenor of these turn-of-the-20th-century pieces. I thought at first it must be a joke; surely no one wrote with such wry, contemporary wit in 1905. I'm loving it.
