I’m in 1985 in this book and trying to control my rage. People are just plain awful, greedy, and selfish. Not sometimes, but consistently.

Tediously fascinating, or fascinatingly tedious Reading this book is mortifying, mostly because I have journals like this that also exist, but I’m thankful none of my friends were the next queen of England. Between the foreword and how forward the diarist is in voicing her opinion, I feel bad for Queen Elizabeth. Ever single eye is upon you, even those of so-called friends.

I’m at Galilee: it’s already so haunting. I didn’t expect Hurricane Katrina when I picked this as a BHM read.It brings back so many memories. I find it intriguing that Woodson picked a white protagonist....I don’t know what to make of it, but I feel how Laurel’s locks must have whipped in the wind. Pass Christian was so close to my own post-Katrina experience. This novel already seems so, so true.

I’m currently in the place where I’m asking myself “What the hell am I reading?” And that’s not a phrase I use often, and definitely not about books. I’ve read a lot, and not much confounds me. But most of these characters seem to be living in a living hell, so the h-e-double hockey sticks are warranted.

I just started this so Poornima and Savitha have just become friends, and Savitha has told Poornima about the “unbearable” fruit she head about. I love the line that author uses to close the chapter: “What is love if not a hunger?”

This book is a little irritating. It’s a mix of set-defense and name-dropping. For example, she and Bill just happened to end 2014 on a casual note by dining with the Oscar De La Renta and his wife? Come on.

Sometimes I wonder why we as humans can't just be content. I find myself rooting for Mo and Gogol, for them to just be happy, but the looming sense of dread is overtaking me. Gogol loves her too much. She's either going to die or cheat on him. Why does it have to be this way? I don't want to keep reading. I wish I could have had it stop at their happy wedding and that be that, but life doesn't work that way.

I love it. I don't even know why except it's not the whiny nonfiction female narrators I've read recently. Hello Gogol, and the troika you're driving. Take me away with your loose literary references.

I have chosen poorly. I'm done with the long line of whiny female narrators who make the world all about them. I feel like I've gotten self-centered slip packaged in really pretty tantalizing covers, and I'm a sucker for pretty covers. I liked Behind the Beautiful Forevers because it was so much more raw in a real way.

I have never said this before, but I'm starting to wonder if the movie would be better. I love some Julia Roberts and at least it would be shorter. #notafan

Love it. I am writing n a book for the first time in years because I know this is one I won't be giving away even if I pass it around to ll my friends.

Eh. The author's preface in some ways makes me see the infantile and immaturity that Burgess himself dislikes. I get the language, but in some ways I think he's right in his claim that it softens the low of the horrifying and gratuitous acts of violence the boys commit.

A shocking and horrifying intro. I didn't expect to start off with overwhelming sadness. Wow.
