it seems the ultimate irony that in a book that flirts with discussing rape culture, the plot would revolve around preventing a 21 year old man who finds it acceptable to date a 16 year old girl from becoming a soulless metaphorical rapist, but never touch on the gross dynamics of this relationship.

I'm so desperately annoyed by the this fucking book and I know already that it's not going to go in a way that makes it's faults redeemable, so there doesn't seem like any point in finishing.

so....a 21yr old dating the 16 yr old girl he grew up with being super creepy is part of the fucking point, right? RIGHT?

lol We're already pushing back on the heroine's assertion that she's unattractive. We couldn't go even a full twenty pages without being assured (by the love interest, ofc, while he thinks she's a boy) that the heroine isn't REALLY an uggo!

I really despise the notion of being "broken" the way these books portray it. I really do. They hinge on this idea that once you've experienced trauma then that's it, you're a list cause, down for the count, as though there's no possible road to recovery. It's really frustrating.

I feel like a lot of these protagonists are just sort of observers. They're not particularly important to the story, they just happen to be around when things happen, like furniture.
