There is no such thing as God the Mother. I find THAT monstrous. I will indulge Mary in her feminist nonsense because she thinks SHE is all that but her (and the author's) mischaracterizing of Scripture is repugnant.

Already disliking this and disliking Mary a LOT. She really is embodying the Biblical quote, "Much learning hath made the mad". We all know that book smarts are no substitute for sense and Mary is showing no sense. Who leaves their family with no word and wallows in the dirt, filth and crime in the worst of East End London? For what? Just to prove you can? Ugh. She is not only pretentious, precocious, but SELFISH.

Really trying to get through this book but it's awfully boring! Can't relate to or am interested in any of the characters. The writing is good but the story and mystery itself seems nonexistent.

“Hatherley women. We don’t need men.” Together they did the biceps curl and harrh."
Have you read a more inane and ridiculous passage? One more of these dumb bicep curls and I'm done with this book. ICK.

Returning this. Badly written and silly mystery to begin with. Characters act completely unrealistically and unbelievably.

I don't know how much more of this book I can force myself to read. Like many comments have said, this book deals with serious issues such as rape, pedophilia and murder, so definitely not a cozy. What I object to is the silly feminist posturing and the insane running around in a cloak and mask pretending to be some sort of super-hero. The writing is so turgid. Too many characters are introduced & are interchangeable

I may have to pull the plug on this one soon. I am getting really irritated by the narrator. WHEN will they learn that lowering your voice, as a woman, to an unpleasant growl will NOT make you sound like a man?! And what is with the weird, fake, icky, supposed Southern accents this woman is attempting? No. Stop!!

Ok. I'm already confused about the main character and I don't like the feeling. In one part she is self-described as a "widow in my mid-30's" but not too many pages later she says she has lived in her town for "half a century". Just how old is she??? I'm guessing the former because both her mother and grandmother are living. This sort if muddled narrative does not bode well for this book so far. :(

I was borrowing this book and I love it now so much and it's so well-written I felt compelled to buy it. Wonderful, wonderful insight to not only today's modern world but the lost world of the 60's and 70's English society.

I'm not sure how much more of this horrible woman, Claire Malloy, I can take. I should have known better than give this harpy another chance. I'm going to have to try a few more pages but I don't see me finishing this one.

So far, this seems like a pleasant book but since I'm not at all interestehed in printing presses or skiing, both of which seem to fill the background and scene of the series, I'm not sure if I'll want to continue. We'll see how this comes along.
