My 1st read of this author (rave reviews). So far I'm unimpressed. The book reads like mediocre Syfy. It's a pastiche of well-worn genres. The prose is turgid & cloying. Characterizations are trite. The dialogue is amateurishly predictable. Crouch's don't-you-wish-you-knew-Chicago-as-well-as-I-do attitude grates. Finally, the "medical" scenes are laughably lame.

I mean at present to finish the book, but I find the writing overblown, melodramatic and precious so far. And the "medical" elements in the book are laughably lacking in realism.

Mostly for laughs.
