Okay finally something is happening! I really struggle with visualising most of the descriptions of places and buildings, and the paragraphs of Maskelle lore-dumping to Rian about concepts that still don’t fully click for me are rough to get through. I’m really clinging to the scenes of action and reaction to pull me through this.

Apparently this properly gets going at around 50/60 percent. I hope I can hang on until then, because this isn’t really working for me.

I was trying to figure out why I haven’t been loving this series so far, and I think it’s because I’m just in the mood for a more fantastical story with slightly more expressive characters. The writing in these is so solid, but it’s just not hooking me in.

Why make a point of saying ‘It was good for these nobles from the city to see the monster’s body. It showed them manticores weren’t supernatural. They weren’t invincible. They were monstrous animals, but they were still animals’

Only to say ‘Ahead of me stretched a shining road stacked with the pelts of demons’ on the next page?

Ehhhh, this writing style and character voice isn’t really working for me. Is the fact that people are afraid to be out trading and travelling after a manticore kills a bunch of people in a town a ‘strange thing’? Especially when the character/author is comparing this reaction to death to women dying in childbirth, or men dying on battlefields? Huh?

I keep losing track of what everyone is doing, and what the goal is, but I’m still appreciating the writing style. I could easily just stop reading at any moment (as I’m not attached to any character or plot point) but yet I still enjoy the process of reading this?
