Whoooooooooo told the author this “banter” about which river would win in a fight was funny??? Because it’s actually incredibly close to “non-medy” and my god there’s little worse than comedy so bad it’s creating a charisma vacuum in the narrative.

I switched over to the audiobook so I can finally finish this awful book while working on things far more worthy of my time. Should I have DNF’ed it well before this point? Probably. But I want to give an honest negative review of this crime against fiction and that means soldiering through the rest of this nonsense to its undoubtedly lackluster conclusion.

Children Aren’t the Only Ones Who Know Where the Presents are Hidden- 3/5 I wonder if this story is the seed Incidents Around the House sprouted from, considering the connective tissue between them in the monster’s unique (and disturbing) features
Vermin Moon- 4/5 Might be my favorite so far. The desperation to reunite with a loved one, to relieve grief and guilt, exploited by darker forces seeking escape.

The Mouthless Body in the Lake- 1/5 predictable, trite, and ends on too triumphant a note to be truly terrifying
Cold As Ice- 3/5 Better! Creepy creatures with sinister motivations and the protagonist’s desperation for belonging lends a chilling element to his final end

I worry overindulging in horror novels has made me numb to other genres because while this is perfectly sweet and pleasant, I’m overwhelmingly bored by it all.
