Why in the world am I trying to read two epics at the same time?

I've been captivated. I have always been fond of books staged in the 19th century. So far, it's page-turner. I didn't hear good things about the tv series. I'm glad I picked up the book.

I rarely read the foreword in books. I figure, once I pick up a book to read, I'm going to read it regardless of anyone else's opinion. But the thought of reading a foreword written by Stephen King on a novella by Richard Bachman was intriguing.
I'm glad I did.

This book is somehow light-hearted while being filled with brutal murders. Lottie definitely isn't a sweet old lady, but I can't help liking her.

Lottie Jones is "Matty" Matlock's evil twin. I'm loving it.

I'm remember why I enjoyed this tale of two.

The Fortress and The Hero... nothing particularly special about these. Kind of typical and predictable. But reading these early works is like watching a flower bloom. I could see the growth in his authors voice with each story.

"Only Kids..." is early GRRM in pulp style (comics/Lovecraft/Howard influenced). Simple good vs evil, dramatic comic-book dialogue. Hints of his future talent are there, but the overwritten prose makes it a chore to read.
On to... "The Fortress".

I expected to be more excited while reading this.

Knowing the research that went into must have gone into this makes it worth the read.

I'm definitely looking forward to something light-hearted.

I'm struggling with the dialog. The story would be so much better if the dialog wasn't flat.
