Finally found an affordable copy of this—at a 2nd & Charles in Virginia Beach (Go there—it’s awesome and will break your bank account.).

The team on this story definitely gets how to do early Batman in the style of Year One, The Man Who Laughs, etc.

The worst kinds of “X and Philosophy” books use x as an example of a philosophical problem. The authors quickly pivot from x to their area of study, making it clear that they don’t know very much about x and aren’t very interested in talking about it. It’s clear from the beginning of this chapter (“Could Batman Have Been the Joker?”) that this is what we’re going to get.

Without the descriptions of food, this book would be half as long. I generally like Zola, but this one reads like bad Proust.

Claude (a painter, based on Cézanne) is interested in new art, and views the Saint-Eustache church as outdated compared with Les Halles, the new covered marketplace made of iron. In 1971, Les Halles was demolished to make way for an underground mall, while Saint-Eustache is still standing.

A hungry guy is walking around a market and isn’t getting any food. This has been going on for quite some time. He met a painter. I am still waiting for this book to begin.
