John Purlia is on page 5 of 352 of The Immortal Game: A History of Chess
Just through the prologue and now into the introduction, and I’ve already learned a bunch. And I’m a chess nerd!

I’m really becoming annoyed with the typos. It’s as if this was published without any editing.

Good story, greatly marred by some very bad writing.

Three typos in the first 70 pages. Plus, the story is told in first person, third person, and a different first person.

I’ve so far found three typographic errors which will automatically reduce the number of stars by one.

Frustrating so far, as Fiorani is a clumsy writer. Very annoying how she constantly refers to people (apart from Leonardo) by their first name, where using their last would be more appropriate and better suited for historical non-fiction. Also, the pictures in the book are VERY poorly rendered, lack caption, and the text never directs the reader to their presence.

I wrote something really long about how frustrating this book is, but apparently I'm limited to 420 characters for a progress report. Fear not! I saved it and will include it in my final review. In a nutshell, this book alternates from being great to being stupid, primarily because I hate ALL of the characters brought forward from King's last book, Mr. Mercedes.

Enjoying this so far. I have a slight gripe about how the chapters are dated which makes me a little agitated as I find myself constantly flipping back to calculate the relative time from one chapter to the next.

Probably spent too much time setting up the backstory, as the early chapters moved slowly. These chapters weren't uninteresting, they just seemed drawn out as I was anticipating he'd get to the meat of the story more quickly. Getting there now and things are moving along at a much better pace.
