Reading this for my master’s thesis—it’s good so far!

This is for my creative nonfiction class “Building Books Out of Tiny True Things” with author and professor Jill Christman. I love Manguso’s clear-cut use of language. She just says what happened, no flowery language, and given that and my own lived experience with chronic illness, this book is packing a punch.

This book reads fairly quickly, which I appreciate. Chapters are snappy, Highsmith doesn’t linger on things for too long.

I’m reading this for my mid-century modern literature class for grad school, and I gotta say: it’s much more enjoyable than I thought it would be at first glance. The homophobia makes me want to toss the book across the room, but that was common during those times. Doesn’t excuse it by any means, but still.
