Not to be a hater but this will probably have to be completed as a cringe-read for me lmao, reads a bit like a fanfiction and is rife with Arab stereotypes that just reinforce racist and fearful Western perceptions of Arabic and Islamic countries. I'm interested to explore how people felt about this book when it was at its most popular, esp seeing as how there's films and everything

girl she just put the word genderqueer in quotation marks. also kinda frowning at the disproportionate interviewing of 13 men, 11 women and ONE "genderqueer" person for BDSM- and kink-related sexual experiences. seems a little limited for a book that came out in 2020

Apparently, female soldiers in this book keep their labias clean shaven bc it is somehow "more hygienic" for when you're crawling around in bushes for weeks. I'm kind of sick of sci-fi written by men (except for my boi brandon sanderson, u can stay)

I kind of hate Paul Atreides as a character. Pretentious twerp

One of my favorite things about how Sanderson writes this fantasy series is the blending of high-fantasy magic principles and real-world physics elements. Magic doesn't just happen, it has rules within the bounds of physics and I think that's so cool

The portrayal of Mexican ranchers and vaqueros is pretty stereotypical. Very obvious that they're written from a white perspective (not to mention all the Mexican characters in the book are either ranch hands or maids)

Lowkey hoping that this book has queer representation like the TV show. I mean, statistically speaking, out of 100 teenagers some of them have to be queer. 3 of them would be intersex

I think Nick is one of the most loathsome, hateable characters that I have ever experienced from a book. I'm continuing to read only to see how Amy's puzzle unfolds, and to see if Nick gets what's coming to him.

The writing, so far, is coming across as misogynistic
