The world building, the minute details are both good and bad. Good, for it pulls you in, paints a picture, describes the feel of taste, texture, colors. The bad, precisely for the same reason it's good. Because of the detailed descriptions the stories are more viscerally disturbing. A disconcerting read. I find I need to read something lighthearted in-between stories.

I'm not sure if I can bring myself to finish this book. The description I read on Story Cartel sounded like the perfect tale. It's not that the stories are bad, they're just far more "gruesomely detailed" than I was expecting. I think I'll read something different for a bit and come back to this.

Well, I'm having trouble getting into this book. Maybe I should "read" it rather than listen. I've put it aside for a bit and will come back to it later.

Already, there is one major turn off. The overwhelmingly extensive use of foul language by the 16 year old young man. Yes, all the @#$% nasty ones and to my mind most unnecessary. This just makes me want to quit reading. However, I will complete the book since it was a Goodreads First Read Giveaway (Paperback).

I must say, I think I would have liked to have "read" this book rather than listen to this narrator. The last 10 percent of the book was rather dry, I think the narration has become a background noise at times.

It has taken some time for me to adjust to Frederick Davidson's narration. He has somewhat of a sing-song cadence (for lack of a better description) that is almost irritating after a bit.

There are 3 books in one. I've completed book 1 - The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries. I enjoyed the story. It's a "bit" of a Sherlock Holmes type story but with a supporting cast that Mr. Witherspoon (the detective) is unaware aids him in his job. Mrs. Jeffries and the rest of the household staff are hoot!
