In the jungle, every square inch of earth is alive. And every death is the beginning of other lives. Nothing is too small to make food for something else.

A lot of rich people want to pretend to be poor people. Or comfort themselves that they could live like poor people if they had to

“Now, of course I always welcome your thoughts on every matter, but in this case, I beg you to tread thoughtfully because I fear I'm so perplexed by the matter that anything you say might make tracks I'd be unable to erase.”

She didn’t enjoy meeting other eldest children, generally. Too much like meeting veterans of the same war. You could swap battlefield stories for a little bit, but then you started to eachother off.

Because I do not believe there is any original sin in any of us and I cannot sit there and listen to someone say there is. I don’t want to believe in any being who would judge and punish like that. I’ll pay the price if I’m wrong, and God does exist, but I will not submit to a God like that willingly.

Because the world had decided that to be soft, was to be weak, even though being soft and flexible, was always more durable than being hard and brittle. admitting you were afraid always took more guts than pretending you weren’t. being willing to make a mistake got you further than never trying. The world had decided that to be fallible was weak, but we are all fallible. The strong ones are the ones to accept it.

Why was life so hard for some people? A question people called you stupid for asking yet no one could give you a straightforward answer

The humanities are always in crisis I no longer believe this is an institutional matter it’s in the nature of intellectual life…Or thought itself…thinking is always in crisis.

"Shulamith Firestone talks about romance and love as a way that women are depoliticized," Elif tells me, referring to Firestone's work The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution.
"It's something that wastes their time and keeps them out of the political sphere and tied up with problems that are private and thus not political.”

…realize that being a "warrior" is the only socially acceptable way to deal with debilitating illness. We want our sick people to inspire us, battle diseases, tough it out when faced with adversity…we constantly use the language of war to talk about physical phenomena over which we have very little control: beat cancer, fight through the pain. Where does that leave those of us who are just too tired?

"The romance of it. It's as if you're conducting a secret, passionate love affair. You know every detail about someone, their every word and thought. When you look at their writing, you swoon over a sentence fragment or a turn of phrase. It's as if, through the mists of time, someone reaches out and touches your hand."
