Happiness is so hard to come by. I don’t understand why anyone would begrudge anyone else for managing to find some of it.

I don’t want to tell jokes at other peoples expense, and pretend I’m never afraid, and refuse to ask for help. I do t want to hold on how I feel, or hide it if I’ve been hurt, or try to prove to anyone that I don’t cry. Because I do cry sometimes.

Admitting you were afraid always took more guts than pretending you weren’t. Being willing to make a mistake got you further than never trying. The world had decided that to be fallible was weak. But we are all fallible, the strong ones are the ones who accept it.

It was exactly what she needed: one of those moments when she forgot where she was or even who she was…she would never try to become a professional. It let her mind leave her body, let her body speak for her.

Bravery is being unafraid of something people are afraid of. Courage is being afraid, but strong enough to do it anyway.

It sometimes takes tragedy to reveal parts of ourselves that we never knew were there.

The strongest alliances you will ever have in your life will be with the women you choose as your family.

No matter how great our powers are, death’s power is greater still. The closest thing we will ever have to it is love.

She still can’t understand why, for so long, people feared witches instead of the men who burned them alive.

But isn’t that always the way? No sooner do you appreciate something than it gets snatched away.

For isn’t envy usually the cause of most vicious judgements that we pass on others, jealousy that they dare to live in ways that we, for whatever reason, cannot or will not?

I wanted to LOVE this book, and I did for the first 50 or so pages and then nothing happened…and then the same things happened…and then it became religious, preachy and full of eye-roll moments. This really could have been a gem, but it wasn’t. It took effort to read past 100 pages and it wasn’t pure stamina and willpower that allowed me to read to the end. I guess a nice person as the hero is just boring?

I read this book about ten years ago and I’ve been wanting to re-read it!
