I’ve been on a prison-memoir streak lately for some reason. Still, I can hardly picture any of it.

This had me from page one

I loved every character. What a story! There was so very much packed into these pages and I loved all of it. The fig tree’s point of view was so good! I love a non-human voice that actually works and isn’t just there to be cute. Shafak is a master, and my newest author crush. I’ll be thinking about these characters for some time.

Hrm. I liked the concept of this book, but found it ridiculously repetitive, and the examples were so obvious I found myself rolling my eyes repeatedly. It served as a good reminder to trust my intuition, and I passed one really great interview question along to my spouse, but otherwise I did not find it useful. As others have noted, it is outdated and needs an update.

This was so good, like all of the best self help books rolled into one. I loved it. I found the grandfather example answer in the intro too much for me (the language, it was just…odd for me), and almost stopped reading, but I’m so glad I didn’t. A book I’ll buy so that I have it to reread when I’m feeling the need. Definitely recommend for anyone who’s ever hurt (everyone).

I’m a half hour in and I’ve laughed a lot already. His casual tone is hilarious. The chapter on his grandmother had me in tears - what a force she was! An amazing, strong woman who needs her own book.

I’m halfway through the audiobook. Right from the start this didn’t feel like a Hilderbrand novel - it hasn’t captured me at all, and I just passed an Anne Frank joke (you read that correctly, a joke - why would she write this, and how oh how did it get past any editor??). I might continue out of sheer curiosity but whew, a miss for me.

Rereading in audio and it’s even better.

I accidentally marked this as read and hit a star rating and how do you undo a rating?? I can’t figure that out. Anyway, on chapter five and so far… I’m not hooked.

I understand that this is satire, but I still just didn’t get it. I was grimacing through almost all of it and finally gave up.

Rereading because E is reading it and now I have to as well, because hearing about it but forgetting most parts is torture.

I’m partway finished and of course started reading more online. I paid attention to the case when it happened but didn’t read statements etc online. All the information infuriates me and I find I’m reading in a bit of a rage. Miller writes one hell of an account and it’s such an important read for everyone, even though it’s obviously heartbreaking and rage-inducing.

So far I’m just annoyed by the protagonist’s self hatred and constant descriptions of how ugly she is, and how she binges or starves herself depending on the day. But I’m hanging in there.

This was a fun read. The concept was so good, and I loved that the dinner happened but was not explained. I loved the two timelines and the short, punchy chapters.

I’m halfway through and I feel like it hasn’t started yet? Maybe if this wasn’t sold as a thriller I would be more patient with it. It definitely isn’t a thriller (at least not yet)

Reading this again in anticipation of the theatre production. The audiobook has me choked up from the first sentence. 😭
