Obviously being based on real life, this final part is a description of the messy aftermath of the assassination of Julius Caesar and the consequent hunt by Octavian of the killers. An ignominious end of the Roman Empire. Thank goodness for Tiro.

The plot revolves around the emotional life of George Webb (ex-husband and ex-policeman). But the plot relies on the reader believing that George has fallen in love with Sarah. Unfortunately I found it unbelievable. There is no revelation, no last minute twist in the tale. And there is no humour at all. Pretty disappointing.

Really! Really? Why does George fall in love with Sarah? Why does he visit her? My main feeling is one of disbelief about their relationship. Perhaps a plot twist would have helped. You don't much care for the victim nor the murderer so you're left with George. Disappointing read but at least I finished it.

Oh dear. I bought this barely read hardback book at a charity shop. Perhaps the original owner gave up reading the story. After 80%, this will go back to the charity shop. I don't like the characters, don't like the stories and the character Melmoth is a really creepy creation.
