Amazing and horrifying so far

I’m debating whether to continue bc this story is annoying me so much. Obviously, having worked in an ER is influencing my opinion, but the characters are so far so dumb and unprofessional that it’s all I am noticing. I will try once more bc it gets great reviews by everyone else.

So many of my TOB holds became available at the same time! Another short story compilation- so very different from The History of Sound. I truly hated the third story but am loving Main Character….so sharply funny

I love Southern noir/ fiction…

I liked it until I suddenly didn’t anymore, so 3/5 overall

Judy Blume’s books were such a huge part of my grade school reading years! I’m going back lol

This book is sooo good! By that I mean it is really well-written and engaging. I think the story will become sad or at least more disturbing as the author grows and conflicts develop in the family, but so far I love it.

So sad my library loan expired before I got to finish this - it is such a great book.

Profoundly sad and full of such hurt. Shuggie grows up impoverished and neglected, surrounded by dysfunction. This is a tough one. And I’m reading the hardcover of Betty too - so similar. I’m moving on to something light and cheerful after this.

The irony of listening to so many books on audio and choosing this one as a physical read. I’m enjoying the story but the dialogue structure is too distracting for me and making it soft to get in a reading rhythm. It’s kind of ruining it for me. I’d recommend the audiobook because I’ve heard great things.

Not clear what makes this a classic except for “ground breaking “ filth? It is not a passionate book. It’s just descriptions of sex and degrading of women. Similar to other self indulgent novels (think William Burroughs, Chuck palaniak, American Psycho) but there’s no humor. Written by a pig
