I think I fell for this book in the first couple of lines and now, a hundred pages in, I'm smitten. I love this mix of travel diary and environmental philosophy. Plus Macfarlane's flowery language about his observations is a treat to read.

Struggling with the second half of the book. I feel like in some chapters the point is barely made or it's a bit of a reach to get to it. Idk, the second half feels more half arsed? 🙈 Especially the chapters about Home and now about Hope feel like a lot of words and not so much a clear point of view

The science nerd in me loves discovering new stuff about the world and is thrilled to learn that the sudden fall of multiple civilizations through history can be linked to the sudden climate changes (think Mayans and Old Kingdom in Egypt).

The anxious human in me is just getting more anxious.

So I'm struggling a bit with getting into it. It feels like a bit of a ramble. The way the book has been typeset also doesn't help. There's very little breathing space in between paragraphs and my brain needs some white space so it can take a breather (although it's very pretty otherwise, I can feel how much creative energy the author poured into the illustrations and the design of the book)

This book, this book, this book! It's sad and it's lovely and brutal, and invigorating and hopeful and depressing all at the same time. It's from the standpoint of men, of women, of mushrooms, of water sprites, of deer, of dogs,... And I love every one of their voices
