JB Bury is like a version of Edward Gibbon who actually cared about the Byzantines. Hence good to read. K?

I am enjoying this book. But if I were incapable of suspending my judgment I suppose I wouldn't be. He has some overarching theory of civilizations. And his theory is obviously wrong. Many discount him entirely because of this. But if you forgive him for falling short of his goal, and it was a herculean task and a great effort anyway, then this guy has a lot to say. Interesting stuff to be taken with a grain of salt.

This book is a page-turner. Awesome stories about badass Medieval dudes, doing their thang.

This is a very interesting book. Some parts are a little heavy on boring religious matters, but since it is called 'The Age of Faith' you had to expect that going in.

I picked this three volume series up, having some passing knowledge of Runciman's reputation as a scholar of high repute. About a quarter the way through Volume 1, I've been most pleasantly surprised by the fluidity of his prose. The book is a page-turner and I'll definitely read the whole series

Lee Walker is reading The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
I'm actually on page 2605 of 5380 in the EPUB edition by the University of Adelaide eBooks site. Which is Chapter 36, just after Genseric sacks Rome and only three emperors away from the final fall in the west after Odoacer deposes Augustulus. but there are still just over 3 volumes left, as Gibbon continues with the history of the empire in the east, and what happened in the ruins of the west
