I am hee haw laughing at this recurring joke of everyone poking fun at Rune’s accent oh my god.

Katherine: From scary, to sad, and back to scary again. This one was good but the ending definitely got me in my feelings. I had a hunch as to what was going to happen and the way it played out was so sad.

Scared Mary: Oh man I liked this one a lot! This might be my new favorite? I can see this one being a short horror film for sure.

Sleeptalker: Well now I’m even more concerned about my husband talking in his sleep. I’m sure it’s fine tho, right?

Re-Birth: Oh this was intense but I really liked it. It was definitely dark, and I could see where it was going, but I liked the concept and the ending still got me.

Peeping Tommy: Not a bad one, definitely eerie!

Becca: Okay actually this one might be my favorite so far. It was creepy and twisty and I feel like it’s a good representation of losing yourself and becoming an entirely new, maybe even separate, person when things about you change. Definitely five stars for this one!

Blackbird: Another one that feels like it could be a Black Mirror episode and was also sad. Grief is wild, man.

The Sisters: Okay this was good. Might be my favorite so far!

What We Have Here: Well this was terrifying. It also made me want to communicate better with my husband tho so like kind of a win, right?

Theresa: This was heartbreaking and also reminded me of a Black Mirror episode, but no spoilers as to which one.

No spoilers but I’ve made my guess so let’s see if I end up guessing right!

Is it bad to just throw five stars at this before I’ve even started reading? I know this is gonna be five stars.

What more can we want as writers than such immortality? Don’t ghosts just want to be remembered?

They could cast us in a movie together. Florence Pugh will play me. That girl from Crazy Rich Asians will play Athena.

That was subtle but clever. She knows Florence Pugh’s name but Constance Wu is just “that girl”?

Writing is the closest thing we have to real magic. Writing is creating something out of nothing, is opening doors to other lands. Writing gives you power to shape your own world when the real one hurts too much.

But isn’t that what ghosts do? Howl, moan, make themselves into spectacles? That’s the whole point of a ghost, is it not? Anything to remind you that they’re still there. Anything to keep you from forgetting.

I am not the bad guy. I am the victim here.

Oh bestie.

And I wonder if that’s the final, obscure part of how publishing works: if the books that become big do so because at some point everyone decided, for no good reason at all, that this would be the title of the moment.

It’s not fraud, what we’re doing. We’re just suggesting the right credentials, so that readers take me and my story seriously, so that nobody refuses to pick up my work because of some outdated preconceptions about who can write what. And if anyone makes assumptions, or connects the dots the wrong way, doesn’t that say far more about them than me?

And fuck it, I’ll just say it: taking Athena’s manuscript felt like reparations, payback for the things that Athena took from me.
