Sam is on page 240 of 382 of Flags of Our Fathers
I've never been into reading about WWII, but this inspiring book has drawn me in as it tells the account of the struggle to capture the island of Iwo Jima and of the Marines who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi. The flag raising was only the beginning, not the end of the battle where the US Marines courageously fought an unseen enemy that was not only on the island, but entrenched IN the island.

Sam is on page 121 of 214 of The Battle of Gettysburg
Very well documented account of the battle of Gettysburg from a participant in the battle. Haskell has some military prejudices and records some numerical errors but they are accounted for in the commentary. The book makes you feel a part of the action. Looking forward to visiting Gettysburg with this book in hand so I can re-visualize the battle through his eyes.

Sam is on page 225 of 512 of April 1865: The Month That Saved America
I'm re-reading this excellent book about a crucial month in American history, where hope abounded and hope was shattered. Victory was won and lost, and ultimately the country survived and sustained. That fateful month tested and molded the United States, North and South, East and West. Lincoln was lost, but his vision and value lived on.

Sam is on page 215 of 464 of Bloody Crimes: The Chase for Jefferson Davis and the Death Pageant for Lincoln's Corpse
A very interesting and captivating book that weaves the death pageant for Lincoln's corpse and the fleeing of Jefferson Davis. The United States bonded during the procession of Lincoln's body throughout the country towards his home in Illinois. The mourning process elevated Lincoln to a national saint. The assassination bonded the North and doomed the South to a strict reconstruction period.

Sam is on page 170 of 448 of The Lincoln Letter (Peter Fallon, #5)
Interesting read as the past and present are woven together to unify the story and plot. Still don't get the complete in the era feel as I do for the Abel Jones Civil War mystery series.
