Already an extremely poor cousin of the TV show. Sorry to sound like Morty, here, but we should start our stories where they begin rather than where they get interesting.

God this is really making me feel bad for giving the devils 4 stars. Absolute wheel spinning toilet garbage. The evil God literally realises that they've resurrected a god to fight her (let's not get into the fact that one of our characters can resurrect people from the dead, but is leaving her best friend and captain dead) and goes "hmmm, I shouldn't kill him while he's weakest, let's go south until book 3". Yowza!

Really weak start to this one. Feels like he's butted up against the edge of what he's allowed to meaningfully change.

This is a real struggle so far! There are occasionally flashes of the good stuff, but, man, he is spinning his wheels and dragging out obvious conflicts to come. Just kill Madorra! What do you have to lose?!

Almost the entire first quarter is a pointless Master and Commander plagiarising filler arc. The first 3-4 scenes were bloody fantastic and then it's just 100 pages of the ship being chased. Who cares! You're not going to end the book with them getting caught, this is a waste of time!

This is a Powerfully stupid book.

Constant repetition of the same information, sci-fi that's basically just a magic system, obvious aping of True Detective by someone who didn't really understand what made that show good. This could be a candidate for the Abandoned shelf lads!

Hoo boy, this is another “tailor made for Gavin” book, folks!

Look I am not an action hero but if someone plotted something this specific to me in such minute detail then threatens to kill me to get me to drive to an unknown location I would call that bluff INSTANTLY.

Look I’m sorry this is a dumb goddamn book. It’s really obvious what the “twist” is going to be three chapters in and nothing about the world or characters makes sense!

This has no right to be as engaging as it is.

So is this just a novella length version of Doll Hands by Adam Nevill?

Man it was a lot more fun before it became an explicit recitation of war crimes!

This is a really competent product. And there's enough Chinese flavour in here to make it all quite interesting and new, to my dumb Western ass anyway.

I am reminded why I like the majority of sci fi less than the majority of fantasy because the focus here is 90% on the concepts and ideas and mechanics and 10% on the characters which is not really why I read books these days!

Really love all the translated Chinese colloquialisms and turns of phrase though.

The first story was terrific, the second one was reet shite. I wonder what the third will bring!

Currently listening thanks to a free audible book dealio. Not an ideal listen as my attention wanders during the interminable Names and Descriptions but I'm doing my best. Magnificent chutzpah to start a book with a character playing rachmaninoff's prelude of the bells on a spaceship. Maximum possible tone set with fewest possible words there.

Honestly I want to go back and read his other book again he’s just the best horror writer putting pen to paper right now.

Pitch black, obsidian dark pyrrhic triumph. Fan-fucking-tastic.

Very strong opening novella, about the cost that pursuing revenge has, mixed with some very old fashioned moralising about strip clubs and morality. Interesting.

This is really terrific. Best single-author collection I've read since Langan.

This guy, uh, this guy really knows what he's about, huh? Fantastic noir-ish writing surrounding a character who is absolutely trying to get himself killed before he hits old age.
