V Mignon is 20% done with The House in the Cerulean Sea (Cerulean Chronicles, #1)
I randomly selected this as an audiobook for when I drive to LA. And already ... I really don't like it. It's too precious, it seems to think it's really funny when it isn't. And when a certain character was introduced, my immediate reaction was, "Boyfriend or villain!!" I also really don't like Linus. I'm on Mrs. Clapper's side.

This graphic novel is so out there with its weirdness and I am so proud of that. I'm already incredibly intrigued.

I was really into this until the book started getting into recipes and how to decorate your home. That's not why I started reading this book. In fact, the section I was hoping to learn from most, about investments, feels like a vague introduction into the subject. The introduction and first chapter are excellent, but things fall by the informative wayside fast.

I am only about 20 pages into A Single Man and I can say right now that this book is absolutely brilliant. Isherwood's prose is of a technical level I have yet to see and it is imbued with bitterness and dark humor. There is such a sense of loss in his writing, of decay that no one can escape.

What I've loved about this book so far is getting to read Albert's voice. Albert is always, always, always my favorite character from Twin Peaks which just makes me miss Miguel Ferrer all the more.

This book feels more like a set-up for the new series, to clear up some gaps, but I haven't seen the 2017 Twin Peaks, so ...

The way this book is written makes it painfully boring. Absolutely nothing happens in the entirety of it except for conversations where we're told what is going on.

There's something wrong about the fact that it takes over 300 pages for our protagonists to meet.

This book tells you everything. If that wasn't annoying enough, it also tells you all the thoughts of every single character. I feel as though there are many good ideas in this book but it needed so much help on how it could have been written. If we didn't have to hear Sarai whine for 200 pages - what if we had only seen her in Lazlo's dreams? What could have been, etc.

Yes, please tell me every single feeling each character has. It's not like I could glean that out of the writing. This is particularly bad in Eril-Fane's case. I don't know who any of the characters are nor do I care about them . . . and you know that feeling when you're almost 200 pages through and you realize you have 300 left and all you can feel is "ugh"?

There is so much telling in this writing that it's ridiculous. Page 147 is especially bad. Also, you can tell how much I like a book by how many breaks I take from it to post updates. Good ideas in this book, just needed to be completely up hauled in the way it was written.

I'm so tired of these young adult books telling us about secondary characters who are attracted to s/o of their own gender rather than showing. It seems like checking off a list rather than character development. Calixte is the one character I like. Please show her being attracted to Tzara.

There is a frightening lack of description in this book. What do the creatures look like? What kind of terrain is Lazlo in now? I'm so confused by all of this. Also, how is everything like a dream or a story? Please inform me. Not by telling, though. Also I'm tired of seeing the word "dream."

I'm not so sure I like the writing in this so far - the prologue is written very well, as is the beginning of Lazlo's life, but it loses steam quickly. However, I liked the play on "azoth." The scholar looking for this "panacea" that was just another term for mercury which is anything but a panacea.

I feel like this problem between Simon and his mother should have been the entirety of the story - how do you get over your mother kicking you out of the house? This is the only emotional honesty found in this book.

"Magnus had been around the block before blocks were invented." Um. That's pretty insulting, considering that this is a bisexual character. Also I wish Magnus and Alec were actual characters so that a fight about the Whole Foods incident would break out.

Why is everyone holding it against Simon for not being immediately in love with Isabelle? He doesn't remember her. Also, pet peeve: when a trait about a character is told to you rather than shown (i.e. Izzy being "fragile" - how demoralizing is that?)

I don't know why a character with a "Scottish brogue" uses "dude" and "bro" in conversation. For that matter, why is there absolutely no hint of his accent in his dialogue?
