B. Ross Ashley is finished with Taiko
Good novel about the period before the Tokugawa bakufu ... the translation prose is somewhat wooden, but somehow that gives it the flavour of a manga. The Taiko, the "peasant general" Hideyoshi, actually the son of a country samurai, was the second of the three characters who built the unified Japanese state out of the quarrelling feudatories. Those who have read Clavell's "Shogun" may know some of the people.

Rattling good historical fiction, sort of a picaresque novel ... one man's translation from smuggler to privateer to capitalist in the 1770s and subsequent decades.

Fascinating. A very readable popularization of teh current state of archaeology/ethnography in the New World, and a sharp reminder of how very much was lost in the Great Death when Eurasian epidemic disease swept through the Americas. Turtle Island was not empty.

Fasscinating. Greatpopularisation of the current state of New World archaeology/ethnography, and an eye-opener as to how much was lost when the Eurasian epidemics depopulated the Americas.

Damning. They were all doing it, Lance was just the best at it.
But I'm still a fan, still going to watch ... if the playing field is level, it is the greatest sport in the world.
