Part IV: Lake Terror beginning with "Strident Caller".

So far, these stories have all been new to me, though I see "Tiptoe" is ahead, and that was a definite winner.

It was Thornton Wilder's poor, lonely Uncle Pio with whom John most identified, not because Uncle Pio was doomed to fall from the disintegrating bridge, but because Unlce Pio had made himself servant to the idea of beauty, which required the slow bravery of patience - and because he was said to own a secret house "full of dogs that could add and multiply".

So far: Two short stories, Two novellas - with "Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream" being the longest. Are they darker? Not so much, except maybe the two short stories, and I'm good with that. I'm simply enjoying the variations.

First one down. A small novella, and a pretty good one at that.

The day soon grew hot, and the cattle, tired from their all-night walk, were sluggish and difficult to move. Call had to put half the crew on the drags to keep them going. Still, he was determined to get across the Nueces, for Deets had said he expected it to storm again that night.
