Too American

Set in Scotland, but the writer loathes the Scots, they're "spiteful and envious" ..
The author is supposed to be English, but her viewpoint character is Canadian & loves Americans. It's all rather unpleasant.

So far, just terrible. I wouldn't ever have started it if I had known she's an American with all the prejudices and angry bitter ideas they all have. Spite, unpleasant libertarian nastiness, she's awful. Stupid and bitter.

So far so schlocky! The word pot boiler springs to mind. This author never heard of show don't tell, he feels he has to tell his readers all about Mulder as if they're not reading it because they already know the X Files.
Proof that Fringe was the far better use of the concept.

The edition I have is American, altered of course, making me want to scream at every "gotten" "crosswalk" or dimwitted explanation of the design of a British street inserted for an American child.

I wish I could read the original! This book has no magic, it's leaden and boring, so much have the changes ruined it. So disappointing!

Murray's homosexuality means that he has a marked (and admitted) dislike of women.
This has a deleterious effect on the book. His primary identity, as gay atheist means he fails to make any useful point

So far, so disappointing! It's got "Vampire diaries" and "the first of many sequels" written all over it. Very shallow, very teenage, and basically annoying! I don't know why I am persisting.
