At first this book was very eerie and then it suddenly became very heartwarming, very Anthony Doerr-esque. Interested to see how it continues.

These drama queens are so infuriating! For sure the soapiest installment yet. (Still enjoying myself, though.)

Aspects of this book are very good, very impressive. At the same time, though, the main character’s perspective reads like circular anxiety thoughts, which can be difficult to move through as a reader without frustration.

This is my second Geraldine Brooks book—does she always write negative characters? I really dislike how whiny, sarcastic, and preachy her main characters tend to be.

This book is very long and very confusing, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.

The punctuation is bad. But maybe I need to let that go.

I’m actually not the hugest fan of this one, which after The Night Circus is a total letdown. It’s pretty slow and fragmented, rather cliché-feeling, and has a LOT of comma splices. I remain optimistic as I still have a long way to go...but I hope it gets better quickly.
