This is like a Communist soap opera. I'm just getting that thematically she's exploring courage.

Has a journalistic feeling, though a novel. And already we've gotten to where a lot of books like this would end -- which is the end of the union struggle. Curious what's going to happen over the next 400 plus pages.

The Story of the Ere-Dwellers (Eyrbyggja Saga)
If you're into antiquated language, nothing beats these Icelandic sagas. Even the translations feel ancient. I dip into these things occasionally, not so much for the story but for the weird prose.

El misterio de la cripta embrujada
This was very popular in Spain in the late 70s and actually spawned four other books featuring the same hero, the latest published in 2012, which is more than 30 years after this book’s publication.. There was also a movie made from this book in Spain. I grabbed this out of a bin in a Mexico City used bookstore because of the reputation of the author. I got lucky and picked just the right introductory text.

"If it was heroic of the Guards at Waterloo to die and not surrender, it is the same when we are face to face with old age, which is not so romantic as bayonets."

I went digging through my short stories shelf looking for something unexpected and found this in 'The Pocket Book of Famous French Short Stories,' which was published in 1947. I will have to handle this book carefully to keep from destroying it while reading. Fairly fragile. I've never heard of this story or its author. No idea what to expect.

I'm jumping into this one blind. She has a reputation as a saucy Spanish feminist of the 1800s. And there are a blizzard of editions of this book. And I found a free copy on the Internet Archive. Here goes my July adventure en Español.

I'm getting a head start on next month's bookclub reads since more fit my criteria in July than usual: (Fewer than 250 pps.; never read before; free online or available in my local library.)

I read a short story with a bookclub this weekend so I'm going to try to squeeze in a short play as well. I use that World Drama book on my currently reading shelf for this kind of thing. That's why it's been there for six months and I'm only on page 30.

I'm feeling the need for some African American perspective. I found a copy of this in a nearby thrift shop about a year ago.
