It’s a book that will get you thinking

Look this book is a slog.

So this is one of those books with lots of voices who speak at all kinds of levels of legibility. Sometimes, that means things happen from the viewpoint of characters who don't make a lot of sense. So important things in the story can happen and you're like: I think I know what happened?
But you're really not sure.
It's a disadvantage of this format.

It’s cool that there is spy stuff but also just normal people caught up in the mess of mid-Century ideological nonsense

At first I thought this would be one of those books where you never quite know what’s going on, but no… I see where it’s headed now.
Weird how he’s not naming the historical figure tho. Just say it’s Bob, dawg!
I guess there will be six more such figures??

I hate this book. There’s way too much detail but to what point? It’s the same crap over and over. We get it. He had charisma. He was a mess. Ok ok ok

I can see why this book isn’t in print but it’s too bad.

This book is like nothing, anyone would write today and I’m not just talking about how wildly un-politically correct it is. It’s like bebop prose.

I have read any number of books about the internet, and I usually don’t really know what the point of reading them is. Because I already basically know most of it. Mostly having the same experience here, but the historical parallels are kind of neat.

Lots of tension in the last bits of this. Everyone really doing their damnedest to do themselves in... and they might all just get it done.

Yes, I am still reading this/sucker for punishment. There’s moments that are OK, but I still have no idea what the overall point or structure of this book is.

For example, in the Philippines we got the entire biography of one character who met the maybe-one-of-semi-main characters, but we’ve never gotten that much information about anyone else before. Nothing makes sense. I think the book is about colonialism?

I've been listening to this audiobook a long time. I thought it would be a nice Irish crime story but it's really about love and romance later in life and how exhausting that whole business is but also how people tend to cling to the ideals of it formed back when they had more energy.
Also a lot about bombs.
Not enough good solid crime, sadly.

I am 600 pages into this book and I still could not even tell you who the main character is.
Definitely no idea what the main plot is or even the theme. Is this just a long pastiche about the working class at the turn of the 20th Century?
Why did I ever start this tome?

I don’t like this book. By rights, I should just quit reading it… But I’m so far in like a moron I’m just gonna make my way to the ending. It’s written in this annoying way where much of the key action occurs off screen. It’s also clear that it’s written by a filmmaker because he assumes you’ll remember all of his bajillion characters as distinct people. He forgets you can’t see them.

OK here’s a weird thing about this book… I see this again and again and it’s in the text of the book not just the characters’ dialogue.
When Sayles should write an abbreviation like “could’ve” instead it’s written “could of”
They sound a lot alike! I’m prone to this one!
But in such a highly produced book it must be intentionally done, but...
What’s the intention??

No one should be allowed to use Twitter without reading this book and completing a reading comprehension exam successfully.

OK it’s about the Spanish-American war or at least that time period. Mainly it seems to be that old timey vibe. I don’t know where it’s going and it’s popped over so much ground I’m not sure where we have been

So the thing about this book is, it has 1 million short chapters which is good. But with each new chapter you have to struggle to figure out what part of the world it is in, because it could be anywhere. You also need to figure out which of the characters it’s about, and I think there’s about 20 or so. And to be honest I’ve pretty much given up on sorting out what the overall plot is.

This book is about a lot of things. I have a feeling it’s also about one thing, but, here about a fifth of the way through I still have no idea what that one thing might be.

I like this part about aesthetics a lot.

Introducing characters so far. Nice stuff. Sometimes I lose track of who he’s talking about or whose head we are inside.

I pre-ordered this book but I was slow to start reading it because I thought, as someone who reports on the space, I would know most of what was in here. The truth is I really didn’t. There’s lots of fun details in this story that I wasn’t aware of and it is very nicely told. I’m really enjoying reading it. And it is definitely a great story.

Most of this book is honestly incomprehensible… I just skipped two chapters because I couldn’t deal with it anymore. I just want to read the part about quantum consciousness. I think of myself as reasonably good at this topic for a layman but I really can’t follow most of this fuck.

Still horses.
