recently i'm considering quitting goodreads. while writing detailed book reviews helps me retain what i've read, i don't enjoy my time on the site anymore. i recently downloaded the app fable and find it's so much more of what i want out of a bookish social media experience. might be asking the void here, but anyone else feel the same?

I’m going on semi-hiatus… I started a new, temporary, job and it’s so stressful I can’t concentrate on anything I’m reading. I will go back to my old job in March so expect things to get back to normal then.

i'm so sorry but every time a book describes a character as white with green eyes and dark curly hair i imagine Dream LMAOOOO i hope this doesn't ruin the book for me

I participate in a readathon twice a year in April and August. It’s really fun! The idea and prompts are so creative. …But EVERY time after the readathon I get in a big slump. I always force myself to finish books I don’t like just so they will “count” for the readathon. Does anyone else participate in readathons? How do you feel about them? I love this readathon but I’m thinking of quitting.

I was hoping to finish this book by this month but it's more slow-paced than I was anticipating, so I'm going to have to put it on hold until after I finish the readathon or next month, whichever comes first.

Finished the first part of the book, and... I don't know. I really like the prose but I'm not very interested in the characters or story. Thinking about dropping it.

I finished chapter 3 of the first mystery.
I started reading this book because it was recommended on Twitter.
It's actually a book in a series, but it seems to be okay to read out of order, though full context isn't given for the characters.

This is really cute so far, of course I had to pick it up since it's set in Aizu. Kiryu is kind of annoying but he also reminds me of my partner in a bit in that he can come across a bit mean but doesn't have bad intentions, and rather has logic and reasoning behind it.

Really liking this so far, it's crazy, chaotic, humorous, unhinged. I love Edie's energy. It also feels layered and metaphorical, but not overly pretentious. I'm not very smart so I'm not going to be taking a magnifying glass to it trying to analyze each individual symbol or metaphor lol...

I'm actually enjoying it a bit more as I'm going along. It still suffers from the same issues I mentioned in my previous update, but if you can look past it the atmosphere and writing is actually decent. Still considering how women and minorities are depicted, I doubt I can bring myself to give it above a two, but I'll still see it through to the end.

Barely started this and considering DNFing... the descriptions of women in this book are already horrific and there are repeated slurs used towards Japanese people. May just finish it as a hate-read, and also because it's short

How amazing that we got an entire chapter just on Momoe, the mom! (And probably more to come!) The characterization in this book is really good. Every character feels like they have their own voice and they're well fleshed out. They feel real, and feel as though they are drawn from Yamamoto's own experiences.
The xenophobic bit does suck ass, and it was alluded to in the prologue as well, hope Momoe comes around.

I LOVE this book so far, what the hell!! I feel like I don't even need to read the rest of it because even just now, in this moment, it's wonderful, but I gotta keep going.

Finished the prologue and the first chapter. This book is THICK, it's gonna take ages to finish, but reading is smooth. There are some words I don't know but the flow is very straightforward. Like Miyako so far, though she is far from perfect.

Finished the second story in the collection. I liked it just as much as the first one, and the meaning was clearer. Already interested in reading more by Imamura.

The page numbers aren't exact as I'm reading the bunko version of the book, but Goodreads won't allow me to combine or add editions.

Starting to get bored... This book is short but it's really repetitive.

I'm not really as into this as I thought I would be, the book itself isn't bad, maybe the genre just isn't for me.

This book is so weird and yet so interesting... I really like a lot of topics that it covers. The main character is also fascinating in their own way. Even though they aren't a good person, I want to learn more about them.

This main character sucks ass LOL what a horrible person. Disregard my previous comment as their cheating isn't limited to same-sex partners

Finished the first section of the book. It's not particularly difficult but reading is a bit slow. I wish it didn't involve an affair, though I understand Yamashita likely included it to illustrate how members of the LGTBQ community often have to live a double life.

It's at the point where this book is making me angry. I want to go into this world and strangle Makoto with my own two hands. He is so far up his own ass.

Finished chapter 24... At a loss for how to feel about this book. It's very interesting and well-written, the characters and situation is (sadly) captivating. A lot of things feel very convenient. I know I'm going to be bawling by the end of this.
