This book is NOT the movie. However, the movie IS this book.

Might DNF. Not because it's a bad book. Just not vibiing a young adult book right now.

I made it 50% of the way before I had to return it to the library. I could not extend my loan because someone else was waiting.

This is a literary work of art. I had no idea what to expect. The world building, the prose, the dialect. It’s all here.

Fuk is the same word for sex and violence. To fuk a woman is to have sex with her. To fuk a person is to hurt or cheat them. Fuk as an insult is often a prelude to violence or the threat of it. This is the power of patriarchy.

Patriarchy creates rage in boys. As a national Product, this rage can be garnered to further imperialism, hatred, and global oppression. This rage is needed so boys become men willing to fight wars without ever demanding that other ways of solving conflict be found.

Until we can collectively acknowledge the damage patriarchy causes and the suffering it creates, we cannot address male pain. p23

This book has been recommended to me several times. Several times I have started and stopped this book. This time, however, my mind and body appear to be ready to accept its pages.

This author’s writing is phenomenal. Broadbent’s trilogies aren’t discussed enough in the literary space of fantasy. Her prose, show-don’t-tell writing style, and storytelling are unmatched by any other author that I’ve read in 2024. Her books are included “for free” on Kindle Unlimited.

Another recommended read from my teacher friend. She used to do a complete unit on this book before the new, mandated curriculum.

I am halfway through the second book in this trilogy. Those who would die have done so, THE battle we've been building up to over two books is over, and our love interests have returned home to live happily ever after. This isn't good. We still have HALF OF THE TRILOGY LEFT!!!!

My friend teaches jr high Literature. This is the first book in her mandated curriculum. A curriculum she’s not allowed to deviate from. She’s never read the book before. I, along with another friend, am reading it with her. I am curious what the curriculum will say about this read.
