I love the characters in the Strike series, and this instalment moves the relationships forward in a satisfying way. In fact, the chapters that focus on Strike’s and Robin’s family and friends were the best in the book. At 900-plus pages, though, there is plenty of potential for tightening up the writing. A good mystery depends on tension and pacing, and this element was lost amid extraneous detail.
