Still fascinated.

The obligatory China or Japan chapter. Is Japan unique in its uniqueness? Or is its obsession with Japeneseness unique? Lots of questions, limited answers in this chapter that blows a bit hot and cold. Also wished for a little less namedropping.

Absolutely love this book. The author reveals a level of access to Japan that few experience. Obviously, he loves Japan, and much of the commentary is recognizable, yet insightful. Keep in mind though that some topics like kabuki or places like Iya Valley are far from daily experience for most Japanese. Kerr's Japan is one of many, and it's a wonderful place.

Having lived through this history, from the emergence of email and the rise of the internet through the Y2K scare and the burst of the dotcom bubble, this book is a fascinating and well-written look under the hood.

Het boek leest vlot. De beschrijving is interessant en kleurrijk. Soms vermoed ik wat dichterlijke overdrijving - de monding van de Congo rivier lijkt niet zo eng op Google Maps, een bruine Congo 'pluim' van 800 km in de oceaan???, Kinshasa lijkt meer ontwikkeld dan beschreven, ... Nog wat verder lezen in de komende dagen met een open kritische geest.

Intussen geleverd dat deze roman in Brussel geschreven were, in amper 17 dagen. Een obscure gedenkplaat hangt in de Arenbergstraat.
