So I'm starting to understand the point of the book, and I think I'm gonna like the direction where the story'll go.

For someone who doesn't read about books involving magic, I sure picked the wrong book to get into it. It's so slow, I'm not sure I care whatsoever about Mr Norrell.

Look, say if I didn't know what a witch was, and was introduced to the concept in ONE LINE at the 60% mark, then I will have zero stakes in this. This book has real pacing issues

It's only atmospheric so far, the mystery is somewhat setup. Strange choice to include the character's outfit picks for the day.

No one goes mad in a snap (GoT I'm looking at you 👀 ) it's usually (always) their material and social conditions (as the great Marx once wrote and I terribly paraphrase) so I love Rhys' attempt to juxtapose her own life in the Caribbean, as a white woman, to that of a Creole woman at the dawn of emancipation. Cannot wait to finish it.

Imagine scorning your great grandma for doing what she had to do to survive - at a time when severe systemic discrimination existed against her race - just because years later you're having an identity crisis.

Finally got an copy!

Re-reading after five years! I picked it up when I lived alone during covid in 2020, and now, in retrospect, I want to see how much of the character could I resonate my 2020-self with.

What is HAPPENING

Okay, FINALLY something that was a little impressive - travelling on a rumour (literally).

This is every single adventure fantasy trope ever, compressed into 300-something pages. I'm not sure if half of it is even needed or relevant. I'm literally tired of the sheer number of times someone has said "you seek so-and-so character at the valley/market/museum/library of so-and-so" like PLEASE STOP

Olga Tokarczuk's descriptions of nature are spectacular.

I am drowning in the story (oops) and absolutely do not want to come up for air. But this meandering storytelling style, where the POV keeps shifting, better have a point. The historical setting though? Amazing.
