I previously DNFed because it’s so long. I like the writing and the narration. When the subject matter is more realistic or directly about the protagonist I enjoy the storytelling, but I get bored when the author tangents off into fantasy/sci-fi. I intend to keep going due to the great reviews and the expectation it will win the International Booker Prize for translated fiction for 2025.

I thoroughly enjoyed this charming book. The writing style pulled me in and effectively caused me to feel caught up in the swirl of activities building towards the climax. Morris Bird and his family charmed me, often reminding me of the loving family depicted in, "A Christmas Story". I was told the author suffered from diabetes, eventually requiring amputation of his legs, which likely explains numerous references to

A fun, even if occasionally gross, summer read. I especially enjoyed the chapters about Elvis's death and the smuggling of prison contraband. I wanted to read this because I always remember how much I enjoyed Stiff. However, this time I felt that the numerous footnotes really distracted from the story telling and the constant attempts to be witty and clever would have been better if edited.
