Oops, I reread it again

It’s really lovely to read fiction where the author can write kids and teens well even when they aren’t the main characters

After a heavy winter snowfall, a character is “going to be gone for a few hours collecting saffron in the woods”

I’m sorry, doing WHAT in the woods??? This is not how any of this works

Thank heavens, I’m halfway through now

I have a burning question:

Has the author never made bread? Did none of her early readers point out that her description of bread-making and the results make very little sense???

If you’ve made a lot of bread, your hands know what the dough is supposed to feel like. And even if you’re working with unfamiliar ingredients, there are mistakes you won’t make, because your hands KNOW

Cane is really good at in-the-moment description of scenes and character interactions. I feel like the writing gets weaker and more didactic when he has to explain what happens over a longer stretch of time
