It's taking a long time to read because it's hard to get into some of these stories for some reason. I've struggled a lot with the first part of the one about Victor in purgatory (until Jace entered the story) and then the one with all the character profiles - it's fairly dry stuff and a bit of a slog tbh... But I'm going to keep at it so that I have context for the next book!

I had to stop this one almost as soon as I started because I'm going to have to spend so much time translating all the Spanish language that has been very liberally poured through it. I'm all for representation but when I can't tell what's going on right from the get-go and have to keep pulling myself out of the story to look up the meaning of so many words, it's a fairly frustrating endeavour for me.

I'm really enjoying this book so far. I can see how some other (probably cis) readers might have had a hard time following the story but as a trans person, I'm finding the positive representation of the trans experience refreshing and affirming. The blending of emerging magical abilities and fully supported gender diversity makes these characters compelling to me. It has been an absolute pleasure to read so far!

It's looking like it might resolve in a single book! Unheard of! And I'm actually enjoying it now...

Uggh, this is boring... Typical YA dystopian unrequited love with tedious magic system and slow world building and a huge helping of yet another heteronormative macho society. I really hope things change for the better soon!
