Isolated malcontents

A tiny, almost invisible crack. Where all the darkness gets out.

Our spontaneous reactions are rarely our proudest moments. It’s said that a person’s first thought is the most honest, but that often isn’t true. It’s often just the most stupid. Why else would we have afterthought.

It’s hard to care about people. Exhausting, in fact, because empathy is a complicated thing. It requires us to accept that everyone else’s lives are also going on the whole time. We have no pause button for when everything gets too much for us to deal with, but then neither does anyone else.

There’s a loser in every relationship. We may not like to admit it, but one of us always gets a little more and one of us always gives up a little more readily. But what is a marriage if you take away the infatuation? A negotiation. Someone has to sacrifice something.

A fanatical antimonogamist

It’s impossible to measure love, but that doesn’t stop us coming up with new ways to try. One of the simplest is space: how much am I prepared to give the person that you are so that you can become the person you want to become.

A marriage. You measure it from everyday life at home at its lowest level, from how you talk to each other and solve problems.

Schadenfreude

If you want to know why people sacrifice everything for love, you have to start by asking how they fell in love. Sometimes it doesn’t take anything at all for us to start loving something. Just time.

That most people don’t do what we tell them to. They do what we let them get away with.

Community is the fat that we work toward the same goal, that we accept our respective roles in order to reach it. Values is the fact that we trust each other. That we love each other. Culture is as much about what we encourage as what we actually permit.

To do something stupid, all you need is the opportunity. To do something good, all you need is a reason.

No one ever said life was going to be easy. Being a parent makes you feel like a blanket that’s always too small. No matter how hard you try to cover everyone, there’s always someone who’s freezing.

It was so beautiful and ominous at the same time

A simple truth, repeated as often as it is ignored, is that if you tell a child it can do absolutely anything, or that it can’t do anything at all, you will in all likelihood be proven right.

We become what we are told we are.
